Un-Installing Programs

As you continue to use your computer, you are likely adding software to it. Using the Internet on a regular basis tends to prompt users to download programs at an unprecedented rate. Before you know it, your PC is loaded with programs you don’t use. Some may be useful, others may be harmful and others still may be incompatible with your system. Whatever the reason, one thing is sure, if it’s not being used, you should remove it.

Oftentimes, you don’t like the software, don’t need it or have outgrown it. Instead of letting the program sit on your PC, taking up valuable hard drive space, remove it. In addition, you may find a particular program is causing errors and may need to remove it in order to solve your problems.

Removing programs from your PC correctly is an important step to keep your computer running at its best. You can’t just delete a program file or folders, otherwise related remnants are left behind. These remnants such as invalid registry keys can confuse your PC and slow it down. Also, deleting system files such as DLLs can affect other programs and even render them useless.

Unfortunately, not all programs come with an un-install utility. Windows will let you un-install programs through its built-in utility, Add or Remove Programs. To un-install a program this way, go to the Control Panel and choose Add or Remove Programs. Wait as the list populates. If you wish, you can sort the list by name, size, frequency of use, or the date last used.

Find the program you wish to remove and click the Change/Remove button and follow the prompts for removal.

While this is a good method for removing programs, not all installed programs appear in the populated list. In addition, this doesn’t do a complete removal. For example, you may find program folders, registry keys and leftover files remain even after removal.

A good un-installer program will help you thoroughly remove programs from your PC including all the remnants that oftentimes are left behind.
