Slow PC Performance

Slow PC performance doesn’t have to be a fact of life with an older, or even a new, computer. You can take steps to optimize your computer and recover its lost speed. Remember the lively PC you used to have? You can get your responsive computer back with the right tools.

If slow PC performance is affecting your computer, there are two likely causes. One major cause is malware such as spyware and viruses. The other cause is corruption within the registry.

Unwanted programs such as spyware are notorious resource eaters. These programs sneak onto your computer and use up memory, processor power, internet bandwidth, and more. If you’re infected with multiple spyware programs, the problem is compounded. Suddenly, you have a variety of programs competing for resources – none of them programs you want. As a result, your computer slows to a crawl and possibly even crashes or generates troublesome errors. Not to mention the other damage these programs cause such as stealing your confidential information, generating undesirable pop-ups, and recording your keystrokes.

These programs also affect the Windows registry leaving invalid entries that confuse the operating system. In addition, the registry is vulnerable to problems unrelated to spyware. Every change you make to your computer, for better or for worse, is appended to the registry. This includes failed installations, disabled drivers, and incomplete un-installs. The incorrect entries also serve to confuse Windows. The operating system correctly follows the incorrect instructions, going nowhere fast and slowing everything down as it tries to sort through the invalid entries. This too can cause errors, force re-boots, and even full blown system crashes.

So how do you fix slow PC performance? Let’s first tackle the spyware problem and then we’ll go on to registry cleaning. Make sure you have current, up-to-date internet security software such as anti-spyware and anti-virus programs installed on your computer. Run a deep scan on your entire system and remove any malicious programs you find. Set up your programs for automatic updates and regular system scans to prevent future infections. In addition, modify your web habits so that you minimize the risk of spyware. This includes avoiding peer-to-peer file sharing sites, using caution when downloading ‘freebies’, and not clicking on unsolicited email attachments.

When you computer begins slowing down, you don’t have to live with it. After you’ve eliminated spyware and other malicious programs, slow PC performance can still linger. Now you must cure the problem at its root: the Windows registry. The registry contains instructions that tell Windows how to function. Unfortunately, bad instructions lead to bad performance. Get rid of the bad instructions and Windows will perform the way it should.

The problem lies in figuring out which instructions are good and which are bad. With thousands of entries, sorting through the registry in search of possible problems is nearly impossible for the average computer user. Another major problem that presents itself is the fact that registry editing often causes more problems than it solves. Simply opening the registry is dangerous because any misstep can cause immediate, irresolvable damage.

A better way is to use a registry cleaning software program such as RegCure to do it for you. This handy little utility is reasonably priced and even has a free scanner tool so that you can try before you buy. You’ll see if RegCure detects any problems with your PC before you commit to purchasing it. Once you’ve downloaded the full product, your registry problems are easily and quickly repaired.
